Windows, mirrors and light allow worshippers to experience the ‘gaze’ of God

The word ‘Changtteul’ means ‘window frame’ in Korean, and this was the name given to an old and abandoned church which, as its name suggests, is defined by its striking use of windows and mirrors. The architects used the windows as a metaphorical motif to create dramatic experiences within the abandoned building, touching on its religious essence.
Conceptually the windows are linked to the ‘gaze’ of the building. The church is both a
heavenly place, where God is worshipped, and an earthly place where God’s comfort can be found. Reviving the faded and neglected building helped to remove the barrier of ‘the window between man and God’.
The second metaphorical element of the building design comes from the relationship between the building and the ground. During its years of abandonment, the place had become distant from those who served God, but, paradoxically, in so doing it had become closer to nature. Earth from the hillside behind the church had slid down onto the building which was also covered in vines. The architects perceived the land that had flowed into the church as a natural landscape created by time, and chose to integrate this into the restoration: when people step back here, they become part of this natural process.
The rejuvenated building consists of three areas: the communication lounge on the first floor, the contemplation space on the second floor, and a ‘boundaryless’ space of the roof.
The first floor is a space where people can experience this idea of ‘the gaze’ through a glass wall that connects humans with nature thanks to a view over the surrounding earth. This glass wall was installed where the front and back walls were removed. Casually-placed benches throughout this lounge blend with the landscape that permeates the building and maximizes the natural elements of the place.
The meditation room on the second floor is divided into a waiting area and a contemplative space. It is open to everyone, but is intended as a place for solitary meditation and communion with God. To maintain a distinction between these two intended uses of the space, the two areas are delineated by stainless steel panels on the ceiling of the waiting area, and a mirror on the ceiling of the contemplation space. The idea is that, by seeing oneself reflected in the glass, and feeling the gaze of others, people experience the gaze of God.
At the bottom, the soil leaves traces. It brings the visitor back to their short journey to meet God. One can shake off hard times, just as one shakes off the dirt.
Lastly, the roof garden is an unfamiliar space consisting of mirrored walls and curved floors. The mirror wall captures both the sky and the floor at the same time, blurring the boundary between the two, and allowing people an indirect experience of heaven.
